A terrible plane crash in 1946 resulted in a morphine dependence that lasted the rest of his life. He became more and more reclusive, and by the mid 50's his germ-phobia began to rule his life.

Record breaker

Hughes was obsessed with aviation and acquired his pilot's licence in 1930 and set a number of world records, often in aeroplanes designed by himself. In 1935 he reached a speed of 350 miles per hour in the H-1 Hughes Racer and in 1938 he flew round the world in 3 days, 19 hours, and 17 minutes.
